It’s that time of year again. The air is heating up, the kids are out of school, and vacations are just around the corner… that’s right, it’s hurricane season! The time of year where the worst storms come knocking on our door. In the event of a hurricane, your windows should be able to withstand the force. But most can’t do this, requiring expensive shutters or even plywood for protection. However, when it comes to impact-resistant windows, the frame system, laminated glass and sealant work together to resist the catastrophic forces applied during severe weather.

How These Windows Work

Impact-resistant windows are similar to the glass used in car and aircraft windshields and have now been adapted for homes after high demand for a stronger window. Compared to common windows, these impact windows stand out amongst the crowd:

  • These windows are pretty thick! Each window is created using three important layers.
    • The two outer layers are double-strength glass. In between these layers, there is a laminated layer, holding them together and creating a stronger window.
    • With all three layers, these windows are about an inch thick! More common, single-pane windows are barely a 0.09 inch thick.
  • In the unlikely event that the outside-facing layer were to break, the laminate protects the second, creating a bond that allows a window to take much more force before breaking open.

How Strong Are These Windows?

Some things you just have to see to believe? Right?

We filmed former MLB player, Ryan Theriot testing out the strength of our impact windows. As a World Series Champion, he has quite the arm. In this video, Ryan demonstrates how easy it is to destroy a regular single pane window. On the other hand, when he attempts to shatter one of our impact-resistant windows, his bat cracks!
